Rhinoceros animation features in Long story Short

Animator Webster Crowell contributes a very short version of Ionesco’s play The Rhinoceros to an otherwise live theater lineup this week at Long story Short. Animated with clay and silhouettes, the surreal story concerns a French town plagued by Rhinos and was condensed to a three minute conversation between friends and hastily animated over the course of two weeks.

Big Story Small performs three nights only: May 10, 11, and 12 at 8pm. Tickets: $10 – $15

Eight classics will be performed in a single evening, each with a new treatment by a local writer. The collection is staged with the assistance of puppets and black light, a dancer and a musician, a tiny orchard, animation, and more.

Late but true – SEAT is Awesome

Things have been so busy here in animation-land we forgot to announce that SEAT is officially Awesome! In March our group won one of the $1,000 Awesome Foundation grants, to support our undeniably awesome event at Zeitgeist on March 1st, and to go towards equipment for future such social screenings. We also got to go to a fun party thrown in our honor (and in honor of all the other grantees so far) at Sole Repair a few weeks ago – as soon as pictures surface, we will post the awesomeness here.

SEAT Artist Talk at Cornish

SEAT at HuskyFest ’12!

Come to the UW campus for HuskyFest April 19-21st! This fair will take over the main Pavilion on the UW campus (the big square near the Henry Art Gallery) and there are a crazy number of events and installations planned. The Seattle Experimental Animation Team will be set up in a portion of the grand tent screening some looped clips and the Exquisite Corpse collective film we premiered at Zeitgeist on March 1st. Inter-Action coming to Portland, May 17th!

The Inter-Action program of animated shorts from the Seattle Experimental Animation Team is playing on Thursday, May 17th at the NW Film Center in Portland, OR. Here is the listing on the NW Film Center site. This 75 minute program is comprised of twelve original shorts, including Tess Martin‘s Plain Face, Drew Christie‘s The Man Who Shot The Man Who Shot Lincoln and Bruce Bickford‘s The Comic that Frenches Your Mind. Animator Stefan Gruber will be performing a live narration for his short Both Worlds, accompanied by Portland musician Magic Caves. Tess Martin and at least 3 or 4 of the other animators will be coming down to Portland for the show.

Exquisite Corpse: 2012 Re-Animated

The Seattle Experimental Animation Team hosted an amazing screening on March 1st at Zeitgeist Coffee to premier this group film. Originally created for the event as part of the March 2012 Seattle Art Walk, this film was animated by Otto Bulut, Tess Martin, Eric Ostrowski, Stefan Gruber, Salise Hughes, Clyde Petersen and Webster Crowell. Each animator selected a slip of a paper from a hat, designating the start and end images of their segment of the piece. From there, they had one month to animate a short film. They were then compiled and projected at Art Walk. Music has been added to this online version, though the original version is silent. Music is “The School for Scandal” by Samuel Barber. Performed by the Garfield High School Orchestra in 1997.

Parasol released with the Journal of Short film

Volume 23 of the Journal of short film includes eleven short films on DVD, including Parasol, the short film by Webster Crowell.
A publication of the Ohio State Film studies program, the JSF states “Art and democracy are dependent on a plurality of voices, and we can no longer afford such narrow, commercial influences on culture. Digital technology provides us options, and, starting now, filmmakers have a new venue.”

Animated across the surface of innumerable paper parasols, Parasol took over two years to create; it is a love story about bicycles, dancing and speed and toured the world, visiting multiple festivals including Rooftop films, Cinequest and the Bicycle Film festival tour.
